"I loved remote learning. That was awesome!!!"

The influence of doing sports can be supported by my another interview with Sean, who also did sports regularly during the special time. Sean was even happier about the experience of studying remotely in the past year. I feel that he is kind of “satisfied” with remote learning, and he said yes.

“Honestly I think remote learning is amazing. In-person classes are tiring.” Sean talked to me after the interview, “...I wonder if my responses are the oddest!”

Concert via Zoom. Guess which one is Sean!

He said that he felt much healthier when studying at home than in person because he could allocate his time to balance study and social life. But on the other hand, he also struggled with the time differences. He tried to deal with the time difference and adjust his daily schedule in a way same to my own (sleep during the day and attend lectures at night), but it led to severe sleep disorder and forced him to give up soon. He also found it pretty hard to deal with group meetings as the meetings usually occur at midnight (local time).

“One professor sent out an email at around 2 am, telling us that we are having a quiz at 10 am. I could have missed the quiz if I did not get up before 10 am.” This is the moment he described that impressed him the most.

“So did you miss it?” I asked.

“No, not really.” He laughed, “But I got up at 9:30 and saw the email, and couldn’t help but yell out three words that would be replaced by ‘beep’ in a tv show.”

Both Tjay and Sean’s responses are not much as what I expected - yes, I had a kind of expectation of what responses I would get, and I did (to some extent) guide my interviewees to focus more on the negative side of remote learning’s impact. And finally, in the text interview with Luorange, I got the answer I expected.

Annie Ma is a sophomore at the University of Washington pursuing a BA in Economics and Sociology. She grew up in southern China and was supposed to come to the United States to attend college in her freshman year of college. However, due to the pandemic, she wasn’t able to travel to the US until her second year of college. Having been a student at “the University of Zoom” for a year, she’s curious about the impact of remote learning during the pandemic and wishes to share stories of herself and students of this subculture.
